The Chickerell Action Group was established by local people concerned about the proposals by Statera Energy for 2 distinct projects: a huge Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and an industrial scale solar factory. We are now seeing other applications locally - 2 smaller projects - one at Tatton and another adjacent to Coldharbour from other energy firms.
We are objecting to the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS),
because we believe that it represents an unacceptable risk to the population of Weymouth. International evidence tells us that Lithium-Ion batteries are at risk of fire and explosion, releasing toxic gases and potentially poisoning our
water supplies.
Current regulations do not require battery storage planning applications to be referred to the Environment Agency, the Health and Safety Executive or, indeed, the fire service.
Dame Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke is so alarmed at this lack of regulation, and the siting of BatteryStorage close to urban areas, that she is bringing a Bill before Parliament aimed at ensuring that thesedevelopments are correctly classified as hazardous and therefore subject to the Planning (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2015 and the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 2015.
